Guilty Until Proven Innocent: The Unfortunate and Wrong Norm
New University nline
I became hooked! I love artists who show versatility. However many artists don?t switch genres. They change their sound within their own genre like the alternative rock band Thrice. The only artists I can think of who have had some drastic experience with switching genres have both been named Nelly. Nelly Furtado was first the sweet-singing artist who sang ?I?m Like a Bird? and then became the booty-shaking hip-hop artist who sings ?Promiscuous Girl. ? The other Nelly didn?t switch genres but brought country music star Tim McGraw onto his track ?ver and ver. ? The latter only makes my playlists out of humor.

Pearl Jam
The Quietus
Let’s just make one thing clear though. Grunge was not anything new. It was just alternative rock as we always knew it and that had been kicking around for donkey’s years anyway. If we’re going strictly by definition being ‘grungy’ just means being dirty and that’s hardly a new concept is it? In fact you could name a load of bands pre 1992 who positively made a living out of it. The music itself was nothing new either; anthemic rock with ‘I’m a loser and the world hates me but I like it’ type lyrics. So what was all the fuss about? In one word: timing. Pearl Jam’s Ten was the right stuff at the right time and it had some half- decent tunes.

Because the band has performed in Toledo before Dunson said they felt comfortable beginning their tour in the Glass City. Dunson also said the band likes the fact that Frankie’s is a smaller space and that 100 people in the audience will make for a jam-packed performance. “I like playing in smaller venues” Dunson said. “we get excited to play when it gets packed and becomes hot.

Students ready to rock LEAP
Ruston Daily Leader
Career Academy a local alternative school is one of several campuses to host a pep rally in preparation for the LEAP and iLEAP exams which begin this week. n Friday students at the school watched and cheered as the spirit team and other performers showed off their moves before hearing a motivational speech from instructor and former airplane pilot Billy Graham in the rally themed “Rock that Test. “Sometimes students hear the word ‘test’ and they think it’s something they can’t do” said Carolyn Smith one of the pep rally coordinators. “We’re having this to alleviate all the stress and tension the tests cause the students and let them know they can do anything. The LEAP iLEAP and GEE exams are scheduled to run Wednesday-Friday and pick back up again April 6-7.
The politics of Nickelback
Calgary Herald
And yet around the time those nominations were announced earlier this year the Hanna AB rockers were met with a barrage of criticism by pundits aghast at the continued winning streak of this band thought to represent all the most bland and generic qualities of the mainstream music business. There’s even a Facebook page called “I bet I can find 69000 people who hate Nickelback” (although to date the guy’s only attracted 31495 haters). Meanwhile when Calgary alternative rock station X92. 9 went back on their “No Nickelback guarantee” last summer with a DJ “accidentally” playing a Nickelback tune the station joked about breaking the guy’s thumbs. Perhaps understandably in the face of such endlessly nasty press Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has increasingly isolated himself from the media but there’s little doubt that he’d remain defiant. As he told me in 2005: “(The music business) truly is a popularity contest and when lots of people enjoy your stuff it’s difficult for me to see the downside in that. “Even then the only reason Kroeger was talking to me was that he felt I was one of the few music journalists who had been fair to his band (though I suspect I’ve fallen out of favour too with my review of the band’s latest disc Dark Horse).
