Fergie Janelle Monae stand out at NCAA Big Dance
The Detroit News
If there was a Belle of the Ball at the Big Dance however it was Janelle Monae. The Kansas City-born singer stole the show with her weirdo freak show of a performance early in the day. Dressed in black-and-white formal wear Monae mixed styles from R&B to alternative rock to soul. With her expressive eyes darting around the crowd and a look of bewilderment permanently fixed on her face she carried herself like a self-aware B-movie actress out of some awful 1950s alien invasion film. Hers was an unexpectedly out-there performance whose sound was sometimes soft and delicate (the devastating “Smile”) and other times sounded like the caustic closing half of utKast’s “B.

Editorial: Surge of charter schools coming to Silicon Valley…
San Jose Mercury News
Now they’re on the verge of breaking through barricades. ver the next few years up to a dozen new charter schools are expected to open most serving low-income children in San Jose. This will bring an infusion of alternative schools for parents at a time that all schools are struggling to save what they have let alone be innovative. There are now 18 independently run charter schools in the county. The biggest turnaround is in Alum Rock Union School District which has stopped fighting and started welcoming charters as a way to improve student achievement. But the bigger change is tactical. Charter organizations frustrated by time-consuming reflexive rejections by individual districts are going directly to the Santa Clara ffice of Education for approval of multiple school sites.

Green River rdinance’s album ut f My Hands

I anticipated the music to be way too soft and lovey-dovey for my taste since I prefer mostly rock and metal tracks. I was happily surprised that although the songs were on the softer side of the alternative rock genre the music was quite good. Green River rdinance’s style of music is similar to that of Snow Patrol in that some of the songs are a little bit slower but full of emotion. It is in tracks such as “n Your wn” and “Goodbye L. ” that vocalist Josh Jenkins (he also plays guitar and piano for the band) does an amazing job of charging the music with feeling and emotion.
