Sick Puppies: An Australian alt-rock trio that garnered national attention with the video for “All the Same. ” They’re currently celebrating the success of the single “You’re Going Down. ”Street Sweeper Social Club (featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Boots Riley): This duo will appeal to any Rage or Audioslave fan while drawing hip-hop and rap influences from Boots Riley.

These songs were interspersed with powerfully addictive rock that employs repetition to hammer choruses into the brain complemented by syncopated staccato guitar strumming under vocals delivered in streams of melodically spoken phrases utilizing multiple registers throughout verses and pummeling throat-rending screams on choruses. Early in the set which ran for close to two uninterrupted hours and more than 25 songs I was struck by how much of this style can be found in the songs of Kurt Cobain. Black Francis’ influence on Nirvana and basically every other alternative rock band is no secret but in a setting like this it was even more obvious. Portland’s Britt Daniel of. While the hits by the Pixies — “The Holiday Song” “Wave of Mutilation” “Velouria” “Nimrod’s Son” and “Where is My Mind” — drew the loudest audience response it was clear especially on the latter that he’d played the song a few too many times and rushed through the lines with little emotional connection.
