95I never had a chance to see the Thieving Magpies in the ’90s. But after reading Tim Thornton’s movingly comedic paean to the British indie-rock band and their fans I wish I had. You never caught them either?h yeah that’s because they don’t exist outside “The Alternative Hero” Thornton’s debut novel. It’s a testament to his vivid re-creation of the early-’90s music scene that you’ll believe they did – or wish they had. The story alternates between present day and Clive’s flashbacks of how the Magpies changed his life.

Totally disregaring a band you yourself don’t like: because they’re music is “too simple” for your taste is music snobbery at it’s finest. I’m not a fan of Elvis Presley but that doesn’t mean I dismiss him as overrated because he had hit songs or died before his time. The guy introduced Rock & Roll to the mainstream. Sorta of how the “loser” Cobain introduced alternative rock to the mainstream. Maybe Cobain and Presley weren’t the innovators but they were the musicians who made what was going on memorable. They impacted more people than any of their contemporaries. There’s something to be said for that.

Perloff is also involved in the renovation of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium scheduled to begin this fall. These projects come on the heels of the February reopening of the 81-year-old Fox Theater which had been closed since 1970. The venue has become a home for a wide variety of R&B rock and alternative shows including concerts by the East Bay’s own Green Day and the Decemberists. Perloff who was also involved in the reopening of the famed Wiltern in Los Angeles takes particular joy in helping to revive these once-lost treasures. “Many times (the concert industry) is a very short-term business” he says. “The idea that you can build a cultural institution and put a landmark theater in the Bay Area that people will enjoy for the next 100 years is very satisfying. “Read Jim Harrington’s Concert Blog at.

Lyrically it harks to their earlier work while guitarist Billy Duffy’s crunchy power chords point toward their later mainstream success. Studio guru Rick Rubin’s sparkling production is a plus. For fans of: Jane’s Addiction Sisters of Mercy the Mission UK late ’80s alternative rock. This establishes the band’s blueprint for beautifully dissonant songs delivered with deft emotion and economic song structure. From the searing infidelity tale of “pportune Moment” to the longing shimmer of “Spacemilk” this album is a modern rock winner with Perrino steady at the forefront. Too bad they never came close to touching it with subsequent releases.

"We’re saying there isn’t any acceleration. Thegalaxies are displaced from where they’re supposed to be because we’re in theaftermath of a wave that put those galaxies in a slightly different position. "Ripples in a pondTemple compared the wave to what happens when you throw arock into a pond. In this case the rock would be the Big Bang and theconcentric ripples that result are like a series of waves throughout theuniverse. Later on when the first galaxies start to form they are forminginside space-time that has already been displaced from where it would have beenwithout the wave. So when we observe these galaxies with telescopes they don’tappear to be where we would expect if there had never been a big wave. ne potential issue with this idea is that it might requirea big coincidence.
Garage Rock: Local Bands Aimed for Fame?

The name comes from the assumption that bands practiced in suburban garages and were often very crude but this belies the fact that they were diverse in their approaches ranging from basic one or two chord wonders to very professional acts that even had regional hits. ” Yet another definition claims it to be a sibling to indie or alternative which seems to be most likely based on. But if the hallmark of a good garage rock band is their independent roots and MySpace notoriety is a traditional record contract the official sign of selling out? It looks like garage rockers.
